"We Just Live. We really live."
This year’s World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day is being held under the motto “Tell us your story.” Madita and Sarah have done exactly that.
“When I dance, I forget about everything going on around me,” says Madita (36), who fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a professional dancer. This is also the case for Sarah (26): “I am a nurse. That is my passion. It is exactly what I had always wanted to do.” Both women live what they love, and love what they live – despite the illness that afflicts them both: hydrocephalus syndrome. But what helps them deal with the occasionally severe symptoms of overdrainage, such as headaches, nausea, vomiting and gait disturbances?
In the film, Madita and Sarah talk about how gravitational valves in combination with neurosurgery have helped them to do what Sarah expresses as follows: “Madita and I, we just live. We really live. And ultimately that's what everyone should do.”
