Better health care for Africa

With a population of over a billion people, Africa is an important market for the future. There are great opportunities here, because there are many young talents who want to promote healthcare on the continent. However, few people have access to adequate medical care. One of the reasons is the lack of qualified specialists—for example, a WHO study found that there are only 23 biomedical engineers in Senegal. B. Braun would like to change this situation by creating the right conditions to provide occupational education for more skilled workers.

More biomedical engineers

Together with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and other medical technology companies, we launched a strategic alliance in 2018: Young people in Kenya and Senegal will be qualified as biomedical engineers, earning a bachelor's degree as part of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development's (BMZ) develoPPP program. Since then, the training labs have been equipped with medical equipment, the instructors have been trained and a curriculum has been set up. Currently, 49 students in Senegal and 134 students in Kenya are studying in the practical part of the course. In March 2022 another 20 young people will start their studies in Senegal. B. Braun has been supporting the training of medical specialists in African countries since 2012.

First graduates were awarded their degrees

After three years of studying 16 graduates of the Bachelor's program were awarded their degrees in Dakar, Senegal in the beginning of February 2022. They proudly held their diplomas in their hand which now qualifies them to work as biomedical engineers in public health facilities, as trainers, consultants or sales representatives in the local health sector. Congratulations!
